Welcome to My Suburban Jungle
Helping you grow healthier houseplants without overcomplicating plant care.
I’m Mahtab, the plant collector and grower behind My Suburban Jungle.
What started with a few houseplants slowly became shelves, grow lights, propagation stations, plant tents, and an entire room devoted to growing. Along the way, I made nearly every plant-care mistake possible.
I overwatered. I used the wrong soil. I placed plants where I wanted them to look good instead of where they could actually thrive. I bought plants without understanding what they needed and then tried to solve every problem with fertilizer.
Eventually, I stopped following generic care schedules and started learning how plants actually grow.
That changed everything.
Plant care should make sense
My Suburban Jungle was created to make houseplant care easier to understand.
You will not find rigid watering schedules or vague advice telling you to give every plant “bright, indirect light.” Instead, I break plant care down into the conditions that matter most:
Light.
Water.
Soil.
Airflow.
Roots.
And the ability to recognize what your plant is telling you.
Once you understand those basics, plant care becomes less about guessing and more about making informed decisions.
What you’ll find here
My goal is to help you spend less money replacing plants and more time enjoying the ones you already own.
Here, I share practical guidance on:
Choosing plants that fit your home
Understanding the light in your space
Knowing when your plants actually need water
Creating chunky, well-draining soil mixes
Propagating houseplants successfully
Preventing and treating common pests
Growing Hoyas, aroids, and other tropical plants
Troubleshooting yellow leaves, root problems, and stalled growth
Finding plant products that are genuinely useful
I also share the real side of collecting plants, including experiments, failures, unexpected growth, pest battles, plant purges, and the occasional plant that refuses to cooperate.
You do not need a green thumb
Most people who believe they are “bad with plants” were simply never taught how to evaluate what a plant needs.
Healthy plants are not the result of luck.
They are the result of creating the right conditions and learning how to adjust when something changes.
You do not need to memorize complicated rules or turn plant care into a second job. You need a reliable foundation and the confidence to observe before you react.
That is what I want to help you build.
